For many, perhaps most, part of getting into the spirit of the season is singing along in a holiday tune.  Ever wonder how much those catchy songs earn in royalties?

The hit song “All I Want for Christmas is You” reportedly earns Mariah Carey somewhere between $500,000 and $600,000 per year in royalties, which is split with her co-writer Walter Afanasieff.  The song just this month achieved RIAA diamond certification- meaning it has sold 10 million copies in total- and is the first holiday song to reach the milestone.

Mariah’s holiday hit isn’t even the top earning song for the holidays!  That honor goes to the English rock band Slade, who earn about $800,000 per year for the song “Merry Christmas Everybody”.  One of the highest grossing songs of all time is “White Christmas” by Irving Berlin, having earned more than $36 million total and still generating about $400,000 per year in royalties.

Enjoy this article, as it gives some perspective on why Mariah Carey’s hit remains such a popular part of the Christmas Season.  I wish everyone a great Holiday Season and a very Happy and Healthy New Year!
