Does the idea of package delivery by drone sound far-fetched?  Well, it might become reality before we know it.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is finalizing a series of rules to allow commercial package delivery by drone.  Drone delivery will represent a fundamental shift in how the logistics industry delivers goods across the country- potentially reducing shipping times, creating more efficient delivery routes, and lowering operational costs.  UPS is even testing the launch of autonomous drones from delivery trucks that deliver a package and return to the truck while the driver continues along the route.

Retailers are also getting into the action.  Read how Kroger Supermarkets is piloting a drone service that will deliver goods in as little as fifteen minutes to a physical address or even the location of a customer’s smartphone, allowing for the delivery of resupplies while at a park or on a hike.

There will surely be challenges to this new mode of commerce and a lot to get used to, with the prospect of buzzing drones all around.  In any case we may be seeing this concept develop faster than we expect- so will your next package be shipped by drone?  Let me know what you think!
